What is an Apprenticeship?
An apprenticeship is a job with structures training, funded by the government, which results in a nationally recognised qualification. Apprentices take part in both on-the-job and off-the-job training to learn valuable skills and gain knowledge for their chosen job role. Off-the-job training accounts for 20% of the apprenticeship and, despite its name, takes place during working hours. This includes:
- Theory Knowledge Training (lessons, online training)
- Practical Training (shadowing, salon training)
- Assignments (research, learning support, homework)
Who can do an Apprenticeship?
It is a common assumption that you have to be 16-18 years old to complete an apprenticeship. This however is untrue.
The minimum age for an apprentice is 16 years old, but there is no maximum age, therefore anyone 16+ is eligible to apply to complete an apprenticeship if they:
- Want to learn a new skill
- Want to progress up the career ladder
- Are not in full-time education
